 People will do anything to see a free show -- even if it is a bad one. When the news got round that a comedy show would be presented at our local cinema by the P. and U. Unfortunately, the show was one of the dullest we he ever seen. Those who failed to get in need not he felt disointed, as many of the artistes who should he eared did not come. The only funny things we heard that evening came from the advertiser at the beginning of the programme. He was obviously very nervous and for some minutes stood awkwardly before the microphone.

The Rainy Day 雨天

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;

It rains, and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the moldering wall,

But at every gust the dead lees fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold and dark and dreary;

It rains and the wind is never weary;

My though still cling to the moldering past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

天冷、阴暗、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;

乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

I Believe

我相信

I believe, for every drop of rain that falls,

A flower grows…

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night,

A candle glows…

I believe for everyone who goes astray,

Someone will come,

To show the way,

I believe, I believe…

I believe, above the storm the smallest prayer,

Will still be heard…

I believe, that someone in that great somewhere,

Hears every word…

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,

Or touch a leaf,

Or see the sky,

Then I know why, I believe!

The Bridge

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox.

“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said. “Perhaps you would he a few small jobs here and there I could help with?”

“Yes,” said the elder brother. “I do he a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor; in fact, it’s my younger brother’s. Last week there was a meadow between us, but he took his bulldozer to the river levee, and now there is a creek between us. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence—so I won’t need to see his face any more.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

The elder brother had to go to town on business, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he was off. About sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all.

It was a bridge—a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work, handrails and all and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.” The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand, then embracing each other.

They turned to see the carpenter raise his toolbox on his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said John. “I’d love to stay on.” The carpenter said, “but I he many more bridges to build.”

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend sled the other one in the face.

The one who got sled felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend sled me in the face."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been sled got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend sed him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend sed my life."

The friend who had sled and sed his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engre it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

A Beautiful Scenery

In campus, the boys and the girls are beautiful scenery. They like to imagine, and to daydream. They seem to know everything but they know nothing thoroughly. They want to do everything but they are too impatient and easily irritated. They hope to fly in the sky but fear the dark clouds; and they hope to swim in the ocean, but are afraid of the furious wes.

The boys like to ride an old bicycle, and run wildly in the street like madmen. They wish they could escape from the school and trel all around the world.

The girls like to wear red skirts and tight clothes. They admire shoulder-long hair and cool suits; they worship pop stars like Liu Dehua and Zhang Xinzhe and keep their pictures in their diaries as well as in their heart.

The boys like to sing, “I am a wolf from the north”, however terrible it sounds. Then they throw away their books and rush to the playground with a football.

The girls like to play with their hair. They plaid, and then take it apart. How can they put their complicated feelings in good order?

The boys and girls like to make a daily plan in the morning, but they always find that the plan is still on the paper when the sun sets.

The boys and girls he tried for hundreds of thousands of times to change those theories and formula which he been obeyed for millions of years on this planet. They are eager to burn themselves with the passion of life, and they are looking forward to a completely free lifestyle. But, they can't. What they can do is to walk out of the campus and buy some gum. They chew and chew, until it is tasteless, but they are still unwilling to spit it out.
